The Unexpected Blessing of Thinking Time

My fairly new iPhone's camera gave me the black screen of death a couple weeks ago. Unwilling to face Christmas without it, I scheduled an appointment for the Genius Bar, brought it in with Baby Girl and Little Man in tow, and surrendered it to the magician behind the curtain. Great news! The repair is covered under warranty. Bad news - it required about a 2.5 hour wait to get through the magician's backlog.

Killing time, we headed over to California Pizza Kitchen, then to the local children's museum. It was both overpriced and fairly empty for a Friday before Christmas at a mall. I found myself with exactly nothing to do, given that the kiddos were perfectly self-sufficient, all the other adults were hovering over their own progeny, and I had neither phone, nor laptop, nor book to entertain myself.

I scrounged a pen and sheet of paper, then tried to apply my brain toward my latest head-scratcher. I am very close with the overall content of my manuscript, but have received valid feedback that I need to structure it into some kind of a framework to make it easy for my readers to digest. I came up with an idea a couple weeks back, but had yet to apply the changes. I wondered if it was because I've been consumed by holiday preparations, or if I wasn't yet fully bought into its legitimacy. This question captured my attention today.

I played with several options, and may have hit on the right one. My goal tonight is to try it on for size, and see if my content nestles into the framework. The original thought was roughly:

  • Take Your Mark

  • Get Set

  • Go!

Now I am thinking along the theme of cooking, which is a true passion of mine. Running or other competitive racing is not. Something like:

  • What's for Dinner?

  • Mise En Place

  • Cooking with Gas

  • Bon Appetit!

I welcome your reaction - on the theme of living your dreams, would the metaphor of setting up for a race or preparing and enjoying a phenomenal dish resonate more?
